  3. Country Description • Middle East • Speak Arabic • Southern end of Arabian Peninsula • Land Area of 555,000 square kilometers • Territory includes over 200 islands • 50th largest country in the world • Capital= Sana’a • Est. population – 23,580,000

  4. Government Leader • President: Ali Abdullah Saleh – depression, unemployment, and a corrupt regime have caused revolutionaries to call for his resignation • Vice President: Abdu RabuHadi– has called for a cease fire from all sides

  5. Revolutionary Leaders • Khaled al-Madani – leader of revolutionary youth • ShehabAl-Sharabi – considered the one to spearhead the revolution

  6. Revolutionary Demographics • Very young (many under the age of 20) • Muslim • All occupations – working class • Male and female

  7. Similarities to American Revolution • Wanted to take down a government power (in the American’s case it was the British empire) • Men and women are involved • Politics are involved • New government wanted

  8. Differences to American Revolution • Many youth are at the heart of the revolution in Yemen • Many religious reasons • Within the same country, not trying to gain independence • Trying to topple one regime, not a whole country’s power over them • Yemenis won’t use arms (weapons)

  9. Where the country is going… • I believe that the revolutionaries will win out. However, in order to do this they will need support and help from the UN and/or other countries. I think that Saleh will be forced from power and a new government will eventually be set up
