English Colonies Established • Jamestown (1606) – Est. for $$ reasons; tough living; tobacco saves it; disease; Bacon’s rebellion (1676) • Plymouth (1620) – Est. for religious reasons; Separatists wanting away from Anglican Church • Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630) – Est. for $$ reasons; becomes home to Puritans escaping England; church controls all life; Est. representative gov. • Middle Colonies – NY & NJ by conquest; PA by royal charter to Penn family • Southern Colonies – MD: Catholic haven; Carolinas use slavery; GA is penal colony
