Making the Most of Your Internship Office Navigating Our Services Required to Graduate: One successful internship experience, approved and registered for academic credit through our office. Required to Participate: • Good academic standing (GPA >/= 3.0) • International students must have completed 2 semesters of academic program (your first year)
Making the Most of Your Internship Office Navigating Our Services Academic Credit and Internships • 3 elective credits (648) -18 credit hour limit • Registered same semester as internship - BEFORE internship begins • Graded pass/fail- Academic assignments- Syllabus located in BizLink, website, UBLearns • Summer internships = summer tuition - all students • Can earn money and academic credit simultaneously
Internships & CPTDefining CPT Work Authorization What is CPT? • Curricular Practical Training (CPT) – off-campus employment authorization that enables international students in F-1 visa status to legally take part in an internship that is integral to the curriculum. • Connected to academic registration for your internship. • Enables you to perform work for an employer during an internship without violating your visa status.
Internships & CPTDefining CPT Work Authorization CPT Guidelines • Limit of 2 CPT’s per international student • One CPT at a time • No fee; 3 to 7 days for authorization • New I-20 will be generated • Fall / Spring: Maximum 20 hours per week • Summer: Maximum 40 hours per week • No CPT after graduation International Student and Scholar Services: website and workshops
Internships & CPTDefining CPT Work Authorization Order of Business • Obtain an internship offer and accept • Report your internship in BizLink • Academic registration and paperwork are prepared • Advisor letter • Proof of academic registration • Take paperwork to ISSS for CPT processing • New I-20 arrives/CPT authorized • Internship begins

Internships & CPTResources Cultural Advice • Once you have accepted an internship offer, it is yours • Verbal agreements constitute a commitment • You cannot accept multiple offers • Internships are not a guarantee of employment • Keep your focus on the internship – let your performance speak for you • Use caution if negotiating with an employer • Pressure may result in negative consequences • Posted internship pay is usually non-negotiable • Ask for perspectives from our staff
