Welcome to XXX School Science Olympiad 2011-2012
Introducing: the XXXX Coaches Coach 1 Coach 2 Other Significant Person:
What is Science Olympiad? • National Competition, with competitions at the regional and state levels • Designed to promote interest in science • Teams compete in various events emphasizing problem-solving, knowledge, engineering and understanding of science concepts
Competition Dates: Invitational: Regional: States: Nationals:
Last Year’s State team • Put picture here.
What is a Team? • 15 students, inc both 7th and 8th grade • The team must cover all 23 events • Each event requires two or three students • Each student must participate in three events to cover all the events • Event advisors assist the students in an event
Three Types of Events • Building events: construct a device ahead of time for use at the competition to complete some task • Knowledge events: know as much as you can about one science topic and take a test about it • Process events: develop and use a set of science skills along with your knowledge
Building Events Keep the Heat Mission Possible Mousetrap Vehicle Roller Coaster * Storm the Castle Towers AT NATIONALS: Bottle Rockets

Event Assignments • Students will request events on the sheets handed out tonight. • Students generally get one event from each category BUT not everyone can do a building event or a process event. • Student preferences are balanced with the needs of the team and when students and coaches are available for meetings
Students cannot be in events that are at the same time in the competition • A student gets first choice to be on an event for which their parent is the event coach • If a student takes a less popular event, they will more likely get their preference for other events • Students may be moved between events as the State team members are selected
What’s Going to Happen? • We need all students to fill out their “Event Interest” sheets. • We are waiting for the VASO to organize all of their informaiton about events – hopefully SOON! • We will be in touch with interested parents about helping out with events. • We will work to get everyone set up with at least one event so that they can get started.
What Does It Take to Be an Event Advisor? • Time and excitement • For building events, some interest in building things and comfort with the appropriate tools • For knowledge events, a willingness to help students find resources — knowledge of the subject helps, but is not necessary at all. • For process events, willingness to learn and share a new skill and supervise practice
What Should Parents Do? • Ensure that your student gets to both team and event meetings • Make these meetings a priority • Please be an event advisor; it takes a lot of people to make a winning team!
How is the State team determined? Student commitment preparing for competition and achievement at Regional • Attendance at both team and event meetings • Feedback from event advisors How well student handles personal responsibility
