  2. Classification and Description • Trichechas - scientific name • No hind limbs • Dark gray ,wrinkly and very little hair • Marine or aquatic mammals

  3. Biome • Live in fresh water • Live in rivers , canals and ocean • Most live in Florida and west India, Africa and Mexico • Migrates to Florida to warm water

  4. Life Cycle • Have five to seven calves in a life time • Herbivore • Live 60 to 70 years • Prefers water temperatures over 68 F

  5. Adaptations • Good hearing and small eyes • Goes to surface to breathe • Resting remain submerged for 15 minutus • Related to elephants and aardvarks

  6. Reasons for Endangered Status • No way to defend against predators • Losing supply and its home • Meat prized • 82 manatee collisions in florida

  7. Conservation • 4835 manatees left • Save the manatee club program • Largest population in Florida • Adopt –a- manatee for $25
