  3. Friends of ITNTwinCities • Grassroots: a group of citizens dissatisfied with choices for their elders • Selected ITNAmerica model after much research and discussion • Currently a pre-affiliate community of ITNAmerica, in the planning stage

  4. What’s the Problem? • National estimates predict men will outlive their ability to drive by 7 years, women by 10 years • Reliance on private auto – 88% of trips; fewer than 3% of trips on public transit • Alternative transportation options are limited; many identified barriers for frail older adults

  5. ITN Model – Replicate the Convenience of the Private Auto • Available 24hours/day, 7 days/week • Rides may be scheduled for any reason, any destination • No requirement to share rides or schedule in advance - the rider is in control of choices

  6. Dignified and Customer Focused • Uses private autos not marked vans • No money is exchanged during the ride and tips are not accepted • Door-through-door assistance

  7. Members and Volunteers • Membership model – riders and volunteers, plus other supporters are members • Riders have personal transportation accounts and monthly statements detail all payments and charges • Volunteer drivers receive transportation credits which may be used for their own needs or donated to another member

  8. Community-based Sustainable Funding • Operating expenses not reliant on public funding • Start-up phase may use mix of public and private funds • Membership fee and fares per ride • Support from private foundations, fundraising • Partnerships with: • Businesses • Health care providers • Corporate sponsors

Tested and Successful Model • ITN started in Portland ME over 15 years ago by Katherine Freund. • Received funding from Atlantic Philanthropies to replicate the model, strengthen technology for dispatching and membership • Initial three affiliates established in 2005 • Over 500,000 rides given

  10. Now 27 affiliates in 22 states

Advantages of Affiliation • Shared Technology makes updating, maintaining and support more affordable • Emphasis on research – satisfaction surveys, effective and efficient operations • Strong beginnings reduce risk • support for establishing nonprofit organization, beginning operations • Share knowledge and experience of affiliates from many parts of the country

  12. Rides at a Glance • Average age of rider 79.7 years • Average length of ride 5 miles • Average duration of ride 19 minutes • Average fare $10.89 • Rides scheduled same day 5.16%

  14. Household Income of ITN Customers • Nearly half have income of less than $25,000 per year (46%) • No difference in satisfaction by income level • Annual Income levels: • Less than $25,000 46% • $25,000 - $49,999 29% • $50,000 - $74,999 11% • $75,000 - $99,999 9% • $100,000+ 5%

  15. 2011 Customer Satisfaction Survey • 98% would recommend ITN to a friend • 96% said their overall experience was excellent or very good • 98% were very satisfied with the staff • 98% were very satisfied the quality of service • 98% felt that the service was worth the cost

  17. How Communities Benefit • Community members age in place and stay engaged with their communities as consumers, voters, volunteers and employees • Peace of mind for family members • Employers benefit from less lost work time for families and caregivers

ITNTwinCities • Twin Cities Metro Area Public Transit and Human Services Transportation Coordination Action Plan - identified need for evening and weekend service, short distance travel, same day service, door-through-door service • Initial Twin Cities service area – Minneapolis and inner suburbs • Service for adults age 60+ and those with low vision

  19. Looking to the Future • Multi-branch affiliates in Boston and Kansas City – could also work here • ITNEverywhere • Being developed by ITNAmerica • Designed for small or rural areas (standard ITN affiliate requires population of 180,000+ within 700 square mile area)
