  2. Bone density test (BDT) • Measures the density of bone

  3. Bone marrow biopsy (BMB) • Inserting a sharp needle into the hipbone or sternum

  4. Bone scan • Use of nuclear medicine to detect cancer & osteomyelitis

  5. Magnetic resonance imaging • Used mostly to image soft tissue structures

  6. Radiographs (X-ray) • Used to visualize bone, esp. fractures

  7. Arthrodesis • arthr/o = joint • -desis = surgical fixation • Surgical procedure to stiffen a joint

  8. Arthrolysis • arthr/o = joint • -lysis = breaking down or destruction • Surgical loosening of a ankylosed joint

  9. Periosteotomy • peri = surrounding • oste/o = bone • -otomy = surgical incision • incision through the periosteum

  10. Total Knee Replacement (TKR) • All parts of the knee are replaced

  11. Partial knee replacement (PKR) • Only part of the knee is replaced

  12. Total hip replacement (THR) • Metal shaft in femur with a metal ball that fits into a plastic lined socket

  13. Diskectomy • Surgical removal of an intervertebral disk

  14. Laminectomy • Surgical removal of a lamina from a vertebrae

  15. Osteoclasis • oste/o = bone • -clasis = to break • Surgical fracture of a bone to correct a deformity
