For ou-toj, • Compare with the art: • No ‘ t’ in nom sg and pl, masc and fem • Looking at the last letters, the ‘article’ is contained in the word. • Nom Masc and Fem always have rough breathing
Uses of the Demonstrative • 13.7 Pronoun • Case determined by use in sentence • Number and gender by antecedent • ‘Isolated’ position, i.e., nothing to modify (substantival) • au[th gra,fei th.n avlh,qeian • Sometimes like a personal pronoun (p.110, 13.9)
Uses (Continued) • 13.8 Adjective • Translated attributively but in predicate position • Usually with the article, though never translated • tou,to to. sw/ma to. sw/ma tou,to • 13.9 Personal Pronoun -Fairly rare and determined by context
THE VOCATIVE • 13.10 Vocative • Fifth and final case, “direct address” • In plural, identical to nom, • 1st Decl, vocative = nominative • 2nd Decl, vocative singular is e, 3rd Decl, usually ablaut • Context is the clue: avdelfoi,( gra,fw u`mi/n
Degrees of An Adjective • 13.11 An Adjective can have 3 degrees • Positive- uncompared “large • Comparative- greater of the two “larger” • Superlative- greatest of all “largest”
