Objective • Parker PGI manufactures a variety of minimum bleed valves for Squibb Taylor. During the assembly process there has been a significant fallout rate of the handle assembly • Parker PGI has asked Team Synergy to determine the cause of the handle assembly fallout and formulate a design solution for the mechanism

Goals • Reverse engineer two handle types, one that uses an aluminum alloy and the other that utilizes stainless steel. • Determine the best material to use • Reverse engineer a handle that allows for easy service or maintenance work to be performed using the current repair kit • Design a mechanism that will maintain interchangeable capabilities as those of the original handle assembly • Design a test apparatus to determine the opening load of the valve assembly

Background • Parker PGI manufactures an interchangeable handle assembly that is utilized on five different types of valve mechanisms • 1” NPT Minimum Bleed Valve • The handle assembly is composed of A356-T6 aluminum • Cast, heat-treatable aluminum alloy that has been quenched and artificially aged

Market Analysis • The 1 inch minimum bleed valve is used as a hose end valve for NH3 or LPG applications • Parker PGI manufactures the minimum bleed valve and Squibb Taylor distributors the part to various supply companies
Market Analysis • Squibb Taylor sells the minimum bleed valve whose body is made from aluminumfor $660.06 • Other distributors who sell similar minimum bleed valves whose bodies are made from ductile iron are listed below
Market Analysis Why the cost difference? • The materials used in the fabrication of the valves. The valve body made form aluminum is lighter in weight compared to the ductile iron body • Parker PGI’s minimum bleed valve releases 7.6 cc’s of vaporized liquid propane into the atmosphere upon disconnection in comparison to 102 cc’s being emitted from other valves found on the market

Design Approach Design approach is comprised of three phases: • Identify the issue • Formulate a solution • Implementation of the solution
Design Approach • Identify the issue • Component analysis performed using Pro/Engineer software for FEA analysis, AutoCAD and a design criterion • Design criterion will examine application, environment, loads, types of stress experienced and material used
Design Approach • Formulate a solution • Based upon results obtained in analysis and the goals outlined: • Design models will be created to evaluate dimensions and that current maintenance kits can be used on the new product • A finalized decision of material selection and manufacturing process will be made • Working CAD drawings will be developed
Design Approach • Implementation of the solution • Die castings of the redesigned handle will be created. The team will be utilizing the same manufacturing company that Parker PGI employs
