Chabot – Las Positas Community College District • Chabot College (CC) - Hayward • Las Positas College (LPC) • F-1 students may take units at Chabot College Chabot College without prior permission, but they must take at least 7 units at LPC and be enrolled in a total of at least 12 units. LPC: Basic Information • Calendar • LPC uses the Semester system (Fall & Spring Semester) • Each semester is 18 weeks in length • Classes: • Day, evening, week-end • late start (All ESL), fast-tracksessions • online and hybrid courses available (F-1 students: only 1 online class if taking only 12 units) • Summer sessions are condensed (6 or 8 weeks long)

Important Dates for Fall 2013 term • August 7 - 9 - New International Student Orientation • August 19 - Full term classes begin • September 2 – Labor Day Holiday (no classes) • September 2-Add or Drop NGR deadline for full-term courses • September 3 – Late Start classes begin (includes all ESL classes and PSCN 13) • September 13 –Pass/ No Pass Deadline • October 21 – Fast Track 2nd session classes begin • November 8 –Drop with a “W” deadline • November 11 – Veteran’s Day Holiday (no classes) • November 27 – 30 -Thanksgiving Recess (no classes) • December 13 – Last day of instruction • December 14 – 20 -Final Examination Period

  12. How to read the Class Schedule • M= Monday • T = Tuesday • W= Wednesday • Th or R = Thursday • F = Friday • Sat = Saturday • am = morning • pm = afternoon/ evening For example, Biology 20, days are listed as “TTh”, meaning it meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays

U.S. College Academic Expectations • You determine your own academic schedule and manage your own time. • You are responsible for finding out about deadlines, graduation and transfer requirements, and for tracking your own progress. • Plan on spending 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour you spend in class (e.g. if you take 12 units, you will be in class about 12 hours per week; add another 24 - 36 hours per week for study outside of class, for a total of 36 - 48 hours per week for school).

Role of Counseling • Assist students in planning and executing a plan of study that appropriately reflects the student’s interest and motivation. • Provide guidance regarding: • graduation requirements • transfer options • baccalaureate degrees • career planning • personal decision making • and testing • Assist you with personal concerns

Counseling • Building #1600 • Priority appointments for International Students • You MUST meet with a Counselor in your first semester. • You SHOULD meet with a Counselor at least once per semester. • Develop a Student Education Plan (SEP) • Scheduled Appointments/ Drop In • Drop In – 10-15 minutes • Appointments – 30 minutes • No Show Policy – no more appointments for semester.

UC • Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) • http://www.laspositascollege.edu/international/documents/IGETCGEFlyer2012-2013.pdf • IGETC also used for private universities and public universities in other states. • 60 UC transferable units • GPA of 2.8, a higher GPA will be needed for certain universities and majors. • Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) – UC Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz

Private Universities • 77 Private Universities in California • LPC has limited articulations with some private universities in California, and noarticulation agreements with out-of-state universities. • Private campuses vary in size • Typically, private institutions have smaller class sizes than CSU and UC • Can be very expensive! $$$ • Scholarships may be available for International students at private universities.

Strategies for Student Success • Take advantage of student services, especially Counseling • Use the Library and Tutorial Center • Know how to select courses and manage time • Get to know your instructors (office hours) • Be an active learner (Sit in one of the first three rows, take good notes, ask questions) • Be on time and stay for the entire class • Read and know the course syllabus • Bring textbooks and materials to every class • Get to know other students (join a club)

Important Policies - Attendance • Attendance Requirements • Instructors may drop students who miss: • the first meeting of a course, or • if the student is absent for a total of 4 consecutive or 6 cumulative instructional hours or • 2 consecutive weeks of instruction. • Excessive Absences, Tardiness and leaving class early may be into consideration by instructors in assigning grades. • Contact Teacher by phone or e-mail if you will be absent!

  34. Important Policies • Pass/ No Pass – all Beginner and Intermediate levels of ESL • Grade Point Average (GPA) – Minimum 2.0 • Limitation on Unit Load – 18 units unless you obtain approval from a Counselor.

  35. Choosing Classes • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units each semester (Fall/ Spring) • Remember 1 unit = 2 hours or more of study time! • Summer session is optional. Not required to take classes. • May take 1 class, or up to 3 units of online courses as part of your 12 units. • Hybrid classes do NOT count as online courses.

PSCN 28 Orientation/ International Students • Required for all International Students during their 1st semester. • 1 unit class – Mondays 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm • The course is designed to assist you in: • Gaining a better understanding of the U.S. Education System • Transitioning to higher education • Becoming familiar with Las Positas College Student Services • Gaining an understanding of U.S. American Culture • Have opportunity to meet with a Counselor once a week – great opportunity!

  40. How to Add classes • Attend the class on the first class session if you are still on the waitlist! Added by position on waitlist first, then “drop ins” by priority number. • Obtain an "Add Authorization Number" from the instructor (a four digit number i.e. “1234”. If seating is available, instructors will add students BY PRIORITY according to the last 4 digits of the student’s priority number, highest number first • Enter your four digit "Add Authorization Number" online via CLASS-Web or The ZONE in the registration menu at www.laspositascollege.edu

Priority Number • Used to determine Registration dates for Continuing students, and adding into classes. • New students have NO priority number! • Based on number of units completed and whether a students has completed the following Matriculation components: • Assessment • Orientation • Counselor Contact • Can check Priority Number on Class Web

  43. How to Drop Classes • Students are permitted to drop courses online via CLASS-Web or The ZONE in the registration menu. • The “No Grade of Record (NGR)" deadline is September 2, 2013 for full-term courses, later for Late- Start Classes (like ESL).

How much is LPC going to cost? • Tuition - $289 per unit • 12 units = $3,499 • Books – expect to pay approximately $400 per semester • Materials fees (for some classes) + • Student Health Center - $17 per semester • Student Representation Fee - $1 per semester • Mailing Fee - $3 per semester • Associated Students Fee - $10 per semester • Other Fees: • Parking Permit - $30 per semester (if applicable) • Student Insurance – expect to pay about $300 per semester

Paying for classes • Pay today in Admissions and Records -Building #1600 if you can, either for units you have registered for OR for 12 units ($3,499) • Due by August 31, 2013 • Payment is due immediately for any class added after August 31 deadline • Pay online with U.S. credit/ debit card • Pay in International Student Program Office (Building 1600) or Admissions and Records Office (Building 1600) with cash, check, money order.
