Psychosomatic Disorders • There is a REAL physical illness that is largely caused by psychological factors such as stress and anxiety • Tension headaches • Stomach ulcers • High blood pressure • Allergies • Asthma
Psychosomatic Disorders • Today modern medicine leans toward the idea that ALL physical ailments are to some degree psychosomatic • Psychological changes alter body chemistry, functioning of bodily organs, the body’s immune system
Somatoform Disorders • Symptoms of physical problems – blindness, deafness, pain, paralysis, dizziness, loss of feeling • There is NO identifiable physical cause
Somatoform Disorders • Conversion Disorders • The appearance of real physical problems WITHOUT any real physical basis for the problem • Hypochondriasis • Insignificant symptoms are interpreted as signs of serious illness • There is no evidence that the serious illness is real
Dissociative Disorders • Part of an individual’s personality is separated – or dissociated – from the rest • The individual can’t seem to get it together • Usually involves memory loss and sometimes change in identity
Dissociative Disorders • Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) • Amnesia – memory loss • Fugue – memory loss plus new identity/environment • Depersonalization Disorder – person suddenly feels changed or different in a strange way – not themselves
