  3. About me • I am from Charlotte, NC

  4. My Family My Husband - Jason

  5. Daughter Emily (4 yo)

  6. Son Ethan (1 yo)

  7. Interests • Watching Panther’s football with my family • Reading • Working out at the YMCA • Taking naps • Coloring with my daughter • Watching HBO’s Game of Thrones!

  8. Education • Graduated from Myers Park in 2001 • Earned my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at UNC – Chapel Hill

  9. Career • Began teaching Biology at Waddell High School in 2005 (3 years) • Taught for 1 year at West Charlotte HS (whew!) • Spent 6 years at Garinger High School (teacher and Academic Facilitator) • Came back to MP in 2015!

  10. Fun Facts • I love cats! • My favorite treat is anything chocolate (or cheese!!!). • My favorite color is purple. • I played varsity volleyball when I was a student at MP. • I still live in the house I was born/grew up in.

  13. AP Biology Warning • This course is HARD. • You will struggle but you will succeed if you are willing to work hard. • You must STUDY. No way around it. • You must be present.

AP Biology • Exams will mimic the AP exam • Will be paper based • No phones • Calculator permitted (but no phone calculators) • All tests will contain MC questions and free response questions • No re-tests, but there will be opportunities to earn lost points back • Labs • 25% of this course is spent doing lab investigations • These labs will be reflected on the AP exam in May • You need a LAB NOTEBOOK: preferably one with graph lined paper • This is good documentation for college lab credit

AP Biology • Strategies & Activities • You need this book: The Survival of the Sickest by Dr. Sharon Moalem • This course will have a LOT of reading (both in and out of class) • There will not be as much lecture as you may be used to • Lot of group work, collaboration, partner discussion, class discussion

AP Scores & AP Credit • Most colleges require a 4 or 5 (some accept a 3) on the AP exam to earn college credit for the course • Scores of 3 and up indicate the student is ready for college level work. • Students who take an AP course (even if they don’t score a 3, 4, or 5) are still better prepared for college than those who don’t experience the AP program

What Will We Cover this Year? • Course Pacing is tentative • Use this to know what chapters to read and study from • I will give you more details as to what are you are and are not expected to know from those chapters • Pay attention to the topics outlined in each unit • These are the topics that will be addressed on the tests • Expect about 9 tests for the year • Unit 1 (intro) and 2 (evolution) will be combined for first test in about a month AP Biology Exam is on Monday May 14
