Chapter 11: “I came, I saw, I conquered” Julius Caesar gained power though the political deal of the First Triumvirate When the Triumvirate broke up, Caesar defeated Pompey in battle and took complete control of Rome’s empire. As dictator, he passed many laws to improve life in Rome, but he made man powerful enemies among the aristocrats. In 44 BCE, he was assassinated by these enemies, and Rome was plunged into a 13-year civil war that ended the Republic.

Already a general, he formed the Second Triumvirate with Mark Anthony and Lepidus in order to defeat Caesar's assassins. Augustus then defeated Anthony, becoming master of the Roman world when he was 33. He reigned as emperor for 41 years, brought peace after several years of civil war, reorganized the empire, built roads, and sponsored the arts.
