Background • High school students need to participate regularly in physical activities that enhance and maintain their cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health • Physical Education classes • Resistance Training
Purpose of this study: • To examine the effects of medicine ball training on the fitness performance of high-school physical education students
Subjects and Setting: • Setting: New England City high school • 118 students: -69 subjects (42 male, 27 female) participated -49 subjects (35 male, 14 female) acted as controls • Age 15-16
Methods: Tested Fitness Levels • Flexibility: sit and reach • Lower body power: standing long jump • Abdominal strength: medicine ball abdominal curl • Upper body strength: medicine ball push up • Upper body power: medicine ball toss • Speed & agility: medicine ball shuttle run
Methods cont. Medicine Ball Training Program • Exercise group trained twice per week on nonconsecutive days for 6 weeks • Took place first 10-15 mins of regular P.E. class • P.E. specialist demonstrated proper medicine ball training every class
Training Sessions: Warm Up: Conditioning: • 3-5 min • 6 lb. med ball • Performed series of 6-10 low to moderate intensity exercises • 7-10 min • exercises progressed from simple to complex as skills and confidence improved • 7 conditioning exercises: • Lower body • Upper body • Stability • Reaction • Core • Specialty movements (lateral taps) • Flexibility
Results: • Medicine ball training program participants made significantly greater gains in each of the fitness tests compared to the control group • (p< .05)
Discussion • This study shows that regular participation in a progressive medicine ball training program produced greater magnitudes of improvement in muscular fitness and specific motor performances than traditional P.E. classes • Suggests that P.E. classes should incorporate medicine ball training into the curriculum • Safe and valid means to promote physical fitness
