CIVIL ENGINEERING DESIGN SEQUENCE Venue-based design sequence beginning when students enter the major and culminating in a capstone design course in the senior year. The venue will be a field site having the following characteristics: Construction is currently underway and additional construction activities are expected to continue for several years, allowing us to use the underlying data suite for several years, while emphasizing differing aspects of the construction. The venue is within easy travel distance of Hitchcock Hall – preferably on campus. Construction involves or is impacted by at least four Civil Engineering disciplines, and the several disciplinary components can be treated in an integrated manner.
CORE COURSES Without altering the basic form of core courses, as many core courses as possible will introduce components from the venue that relate to the subject matter in the course. The Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will monitor the content of these feeder courses to make certain that this objective is met. The Department will provide coordination and assistance in obtaining venue-specific data (construction plans, aerial photos, soil boring, meteorological data, etc.) in a format that facilitates its use in the individual feeder core courses.
MAJOR OPTION COURSES To the extent possible, faculty in major option design courses will be encouraged to port the design portion of their courses at the Capstone venue. It is understood that many major option design courses might require physical characteristics and/or data suites that do not exist at the Capstone venue. In no case will the technical robustness of a major option design course be compromised solely to accommodate the Capstone venue. However, the Department will make every effort to support porting major option design courses at the Capstone venue.
CAPSTONE DESIGN COURSE CE660 (4 hrs.) will be developed to host the Civil Engineering Capstone Design course. This course will be proposed so that it complies with all of the requirements of sections I.C.3.d(3)(c), I.C.3.d(3)(d), I.C.3.d(3)(e), and II.G.3.b of the ABET document: CRITERIA FOR ACCREDITING ENGINEERING PROGRAMS. The prerequisite sequence will be set to encourage students to have taken as many of the pre-capstone feeder courses as possible, given the constraints of practicality.
