The Cub The Weekly Newsletter of the Oak Cliff Lions Club, the “Greatest Lions Club in all of Lions International!!” www.oakclifflions.org We Serve Issue November 27, 2013 • This Week’s Recap… • A more lightly attended meeting due to the holiday, we still had fun and fellowship today with some noteworthy moments. District Governor Lion Darla Wisdom made an announcement about the District’s participation in the upcoming Dallas Marathon, which will host approximately 25,000 runners on Dallas’ West Loop. See the announcement below for details. Lion Wisdom also shared that incoming District Governor Don Ables resigned for unshared reasons, and Past District Governor Lion Ken Gleason, the immediate PDG, has accepted the duties of repeating his year of service as the incoming District Governor. • I had the privilege of serving “double duty” today as the Tail Twister, which was a ton of fun. Nearly all Lions in attendance were fined for either sitting at an honoree table or not being a Past President. Lion Kathy Frazier added a humorous moment in reaction to the topic of divorce, and my own daughter, Ellie, provided the high point at the end when she asked if she could go to the bathroom in front of the entire room. • Our program today was local singer and entertainer Laura Ainsworth. Blessed with the gift of perfect pitch, she shared her big band styled original music with lots of tongue-in-cheek humor including her title track on her CD, “Keep It To Yourself,” which chronicled all the ways a potential hit man could help a jilted lover dispose of her prior interest. • Today’s Announcements: • December 4, we will sell pies for the annual Past President’s Roast to be held during the first meeting back from the holidays in January. • December 8, OCLC will support the West Loop leg of the Dallas Marathon; there is a $3000 prize for the group with the best spirit! Lions District 2X-1 are in a prime position at Republic and Commerce Streets. The race begins at 8 a.m., so come and show your Lion Pride!!! Don’t Miss Next Week! Come and hear about The Promise House from Dr. Harriet Boorhem. Sunshine & Care Report Lion Irvin Gainer had surgery for bladder cancer and is assured they got everything. Lion Dick Lenzner’s wife had a full body scan that came in clear of her cancer too. We had a lot to be thankful for this week and hope you were able to enjoy a long weekend with family and friends.

  2. Next Week’s Program: The Promise House Dr. Harriet Boorhem was appointed President of Promise House in June 2001. Under her supervision, the agency has increased revenue from $2 million to $4.2 million through government grants and contracts, as well as foundation, corporate and individual giving; increased the number of clients served from 3,000 per year to over 7,300 teens and family members per year; and increased fundraising dollars from $250,000 in 2001 to over $1,000,000 in 2008. She successfully facilitated and completed the organization's strategic plan for years 2004 through 2007 ahead of schedule, and has maintained a 95 percent success rate on government grants submitted. In 2007, she guided the organization on a rebranding and public relations campaign, as well as the creation of a new strategic plan focusing on program growth and facility needs to support growth. Harriet received her doctorate in family therapy in 1993 from Texas A&M University at Commerce. Prior to her employment with Promise House, she maintained a private practice in family therapy and supervision of therapists, taught as an adjunct professor at Texas Woman’s University in the Family Sciences Department and provided consultation to nonprofit organizations in clinical issues. Prior to being named president of Promise House, Harriet served the agency as clinical director. For over 20 years, Harriet has lived in a historic district in Oak Cliff in a 90-year-old home. If her money is not going down the black hole of “This Old House”, it is going to her two beautiful daughters and two high-maintenance dogs. If she had more energy or time, she would love to sing in a rock band—which is probably why she relates so well to teens—she is one at heart. About The Promise House Promise House embraces homeless, runaway and at-risk teens, giving them needed support, encouragement and hope to live a better life. Our programs cover the vital needs of teens, including emergency shelter, transitional living, pregnant and parenting teen services, individual, group and family counseling, street outreach and educational intervention. Promise House is dedicated to providing the strength, stability and hope that teens need today to fulfill their promise for a healthy, productive and self-sufficient tomorrow. Since 1984, Promise House has had an open door 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to youth and families in crisis serving over 70,000 teens and families in North Texas. Guests This Week Lion Senada Rustic welcomed her daughter. District Governor Lion Darla Wisdom introduced Jean Farley. Lion JoAnn Holt Caussey hosted Juanita Brown, and I brought my three daughters – Bailey, Aubrey and Ellie. Only two more programs in 2013, so start thinking about who you can invite to either enjoy one of our outstanding programs or become a potential member!
