  3. SPIPA Organization and Background • South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency (SPIPA) • Consortium of five tribes: Skokomish, Chehalis, Nisqually, Squaxin Island, and Shoalwater Bay

  4. SPIPA Organization and Background Mission: Deliver social, human and health services and provide training and technical assistance, resource development and planning to the Chehalis, Nisqually, Shoalwater Bay, Skokomish and Squaxin Island Tribal Communities.

SPIPA and Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan • The SPIPA Tribes are in the process of implementing the Cancer plan activities that were written about a year ago. • The implementation activities' are sorted in a hand book and broken down by year for the next five years. • There are four main goals; • Provide cancer prevention, education and awareness for tribal and community members at all SPIPA Tribes. • Detect all screen able cancers at the earliest stage for tribal and community members at all SPIPA Tribes. • Ensure that all tribal and community members with cancers at all SPIPA Tribes receive cancer treatment services that are state of the art, timely comprehensive, traditional, and affordable. • Ensure that tribal and community cancer survivors and their loved ones at all SPIPA Tribes receive support.

  7. SPIPA Youth Conference • Two years ago, a popular youth age 14, died of leukemia. • Cancer victim was very active in sports and social activities • Friends and SPIPA youth community concerned: “What is cancer? How does one get cancer?”

SPIPA Youth Conference Preparation • SPIPA will hosts it’s first Youth Cancer Summit. • Make it interactive • No classic lectures • No power point! • Cancer info is NOT presented in lecture style • Instead incorporates cancer info in fun activities • Include aspects of their own culture in these activities

  10. SPIPA Youth Conference (Recap) • GOAL: To educate youth about cancer and introduce them to the importance of cancer prevention • Main Idea: Have youth leaders from each tribe participate in the organization and implementation of the conference.

  11. SPIPA Youth Survey • It is expected that 200-300 youth will be attending the conference • SPIPA asked NPCC to come up with and create two surveys to give to these youth: • Knowledge, Attitude, and Belief (K.A.B.) Survey • Behaviors Survey

  12. Goal: To determine the extent of SPIPA’s youth knowledge, attitudes, and belief toward cancer and their health. We want to know all info that may put them at risk to cancer Will include questions on topics like: Cancer Health Care Diet Exercise Smoking Drugs and Alcohol Traditional Foods STD’s (mainly HPV knowledge) K.A.B Survey

  13. Goal: To determine the overall behavior of SPIPA’s youth We want to know all the behaviors that may put them at risk for developing cancer Will include questions on topics like: Diet Exercise Smoking Drugs and Alcohol Traditional Foods Behavior’s Survey

  14. November 2006: Speak Out Conference 1st meeting held for youth leaders 25 youth leaders came (5 youth per tribe) Purpose to get them ready for leadership roles they are going to serve SPIPA Past, Current, and Future Work

February 18th, 2007: Regroup with youth leaders Created plans and ideas on disseminating cancer information that is fun and emphasizes their own culture Ideas created by the youth leader: Fear Factor (guess wrong cancer fact, have to eat something gross!) Cancer Clue (How did John Simmons die of cancer?) Traditional Food Cook out contest (with elders as the judges) Jeopardy! SPIPA Past, Current, and Future Work

  16. SPIPA Past, Current, and Future Work • Next youth meeting is April 15th • Discuss ways to implement ideas created by youth at planning session! • Tentative Date for Conference is June 15th & 16th
