Hermann Hesse • Married 3 times • Maria Bernoulli (3 kids) • Ruth Wenger • NinonDolbin • Self and Family • Born in the Black Forest town of Calw, in Germany, Wuttenberg, on July 2, 1877. • From a religious family who expected him to study theology.
Life as a poet and novelist • Was a huge traveler: • Switzerland • Montagnola • India • His work focused on the duality of spirit and nature, body versus mind, and the individual’s spiritual search outside the restrictions of the society.
… • Hesse received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. • He later died of cerebral hemorrhage in his sleep on August 9, 1962 at the 85. • While on his visit to India in 1911, Hesse was highly influenced by the ancient Hindus and ancient Chinese cultures. • In 1922, Hesse wrote Siddhartha, a novel based on Buddhism.
What is literature and why do we study it? • We use literature in a broad sense, to mean “compositions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, and analyze and advocate ideas”.
What we gain from it • Helps us grow (personally and intellectually) • Develops our imagination • Increases our understanding • Recognize human dreams and struggles • It makes us human
