Challenges and Opportunities • Gone are the days when “SIP” was synonymous with “just a taste” • PM10 • Maricopa County 5% Plan • Pinal County Redesignation • Ozone • Phoenix area – for now • SO2 • Copper smelter specific areas in Hayden and Miami • Lead “IF” SIP • Regional Haze • Revising 2009 ozone boundary recommendation

Exceptional Events • Summer of 2011 was extreme • 17 PM10 exceedance days in Maricopa County alone • Around 100 monitored violations • 1 hour PM10 concentration of more than 6,000 µg/m3 • Working closely with staff in Region 9 to address • Draft demonstration for July 2 – 8, 2011 submitted • Concerns with April 2011 guidance document still remain. • Rural area exceptional event demonstrations • Dispute resolution

  7. On the horizon • New Source Review Reform & SIP Gap • Emergency Episodes Rule • SO2 maintenance plans and their interaction with existing SO2 NAA • Regional haze? • Regional air quality planning • Ozone • CSAPR?
