Solving A System of Equations Ernesto Romero / LesslieRangel December 18, 2013 5A
Problem Situation • The Key Club is selling t-shirts and key chains. They sold a total of 261 items. Twice as many shirts were sold as key chains. How many of each was sold?
Define Variables • K = Number of key chains sold • T = Number of T-t-shirts sold
System of Equations • K + T = 261 • T = 2K
Solution Method • We are going to use substitution to solve this equation. • The variable that we are going to substituting (replacing) is T. • We are going to be replacing T in the first equation with 2K.
Step 1 of Solution • First step is to replace the letter T • K + 2K = 261 • 3K = 261 • K = 87
Step 2of Solution • Second step is to solve the equation now that you know what K equals. • T = 2(87) • T = 174
Solution to the System of Equations • (K, T) (87, 174)
Check of Solution • K+T=261 • If K=87 and T=174, then 87+174=261☺ • 174 = 2(87) ☺
Solution in the Problem Situation • 87 is the number of key chains sold. • 174 is the number of t-shirts sold.
