Solving A System of Equations Janelle Rodriguez & Alexis Zuniga December 18, 2013 7-8 A
Problem Situation • Two different types of batteries are needed to run Joshua’s remote controlled Jeep. • The two batteries produce a total voltage of 6.5V. • The difference in their voltage is 2.5V. • Determine the voltages of the two batteries.
Define Variables • a = voltage in first battery • b = voltage in second battery
System of Equations • a + b = 6.5 • a – b = 2.5
Solution Method • Guess and Check
Step 1 of Solution • We tried: 3+3 which equaled to 6 which didn’t work out.
Step 2 of Solution • We tried 4.5 + 2 to figure out the first equation which equaled 6.5 and when that worked we used 4.5 – 2 to figure out the second equation which also worked.
Solution to the System of Equations (a, b) (4.5, 2)
Check of Solution • 4.5 + 2 = 6.5 • 4.5 – 2 = 2.5
Solution in the Problem Situation • The voltage of the first battery is 4.5 volts. • The voltage of the second battery is 2 volts.
