  1. Emphysema

  2. What is Emphysema? • Emphysema is a condition in which the walls between the alveoli or air sacs within the lung lose their ability to stretch and recoil. The air sacs become weakened and break.  Elasticity of the lung tissue is lost, causing air to be trapped in the air sacs and impairing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

  3. Symptoms • Shortness of breath • Cough • Limited exercise tolerance.

  4. WHAT CAUSES EMPHYSEMA? • Cigarette smoking • Born with a deficiency of a "lung protector“

  5. HOW SERIOUS IS EMPHYSEMA? • 3.1 million Americans have been diagnosed with emphysema • 91% were 45 years of age or older • Men tend to have higher rates of emphysema. • Claims the lives of more than 120,000 Americans each year.

  6. HOW DOES EMPHYSEMA DEVELOP? • Smoking destroys the alveoli or air sacs. This is where the carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen in the blood. The alveoli are thin, so damage to them is permanent.

  7. When they are damaged, they are unable to transfer as much oxygen into the bloodstream. • Lungs lose their elasticity, which makes it hard to exhale.

  8. TREATMENT FOR EMPHYSEMA • Quit Smoking • Bronchodilator drugs- These relax the airways and open the airways. • Antibiotics- helps with bacterial infection in the lungs. • Exercise • Lung transplant • Lung volume reduction surgery.
