  3. 5 Pillars of Islam 1)Shahada: Creed of Islam/ Muslim expression of faith “I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, the One, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his messenger” 2) Salat: Daily Worship/ Prayer (5x’s) Adhan- Call to prayer Muezzin- Chants the call to prayer from a minaret 3) Zakat: Alms- Give to Charity • Must observe fasting during Ramadan (Sawm): 9th month of the Islamic lunar Calendar (11 days shorter than solar calendar. Began in 622 when Muhammad left Mecca for Medina) Year: 1434 5) Hajj: Pilgrimage to Mecca Kaaba

Ramadan in 2015 will start on Thursday, the 18th of June and will continue for 30 days until Friday, the 17th of July. • Holidays— • Eid al-Fitr: • Feast of Breaking the Fast • Celebration of the end of Ramadan • End of 9th month • Eid al-Adha: • Feast of the Sacrifice • Willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his first born son (Ishmael) as an act of submission to God’s command • End of 10th month
