7. Dr. Gisle Bjøntegaard , Principal Scientist, TANDBERG Dr. Bjøntegaard has a long and outstanding career in video compression research and video coding standardization in CCITT, ITU and ISO. The results of his research and his numerous contributions are integral parts of today’s modern video coding standards such as H.261, H.263, H.264, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. From 1986-1992, Dr. Bjøntegaard participated in and, during two years chaired the COST211 video coding activities. COST211 activities lead to the development of H.261 and resulted in major inputs to MPEG-2 and H.263. It is under his direction at Telenor that the main elements of H.263 were developed and then further proposed to ISO as a base for the development of MPEG-4. In 1998, Gisle’s proposal led to the development of H.264 in which his numerous technical inputs and contributions had a fundamental impact on the final version of H.264 also known as MPEG-4 Part 10. Today, at TANDBERG, Gisle Bjøntegaard continues to play a large role in the improvement of video coding standards with his work on the definition of a method with coding performance equal to H.264 but with considerably less implementation complexity and on coding improvements pointing towards a future H.265 video standard. Dr. Bjøntegaard holds a number of patents in the field of video coding. He received a Ph.D. degree in physics from University of Oslo, Norway in 1974. From 1974 to 2000, he was employed by Telenor Research and Development, prior to joining TANDBERG in1980. IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

Dr. Wen-Hsiung Chen, Cisco Fellow, Cisco Systems Dr. Wen Chen is a Cisco Fellow, an Honorary Professor at the Beijing Broadcasting Institute, Tianjin University and Nanjing University of Post and Telecommunications. Prior to Cisco, Dr. Chen was Board Director and CTO of Komodo Technology, Inc. responsible for packet telephony and strategic business developments. Prior to Komodo, he was Founder, Chairman of the Board and President of V-Bits, Inc. pioneering the development of the RateMux digital grooming and splicing system. Previously, he was Founder and Executive VP of CLI, pioneering the development of CLI’s video conferencing and broadcast TV products, also serving as Adjunct Professor at San Jose State University for fifteen years. He is a pioneer in the field of digital image. Inventions include the Slant Transform for image coding, fast computational algorithm and convolution theorem for the Discrete Cosine Transform, the Combined Symbol Matching for facsimile coding, and the Scene Adaptive Coding for video coding. These inventions are cornerstones for most digital video products from videophone, video conferencing, digital broadcast TV, to digital HDTV systems. Though he did not participate in standardization work directly his research results were taken into account there. Dr. Chen received his BS degree from National Taiwan University, Masters from Kansas State and Ph.D. from the USC, all in Electrical Engineering. He is an honorary board member of the Chinese Information Networking Association, lifetime member of the North American Taiwanese Engineers' Association, member of the ITRI Technical Advisory Committee, and the Advisory Boards of YZTech, Amity and MedioStream. In 1995, he was elected as a Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to the video coding technologies and their commercial applications. IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

11. Mr. Bernard Marti, Director of Standards, France Telecom Born in Paris in 1943, Bernard Marti is a graduate from the École Polytechnique and the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications. He also graduated from the Institute of Eastern Languages. He has been involved in research, development or project management on a wide range of topics such as computer media production, broadcast production, digital media, data services, broadcast services, telecommunication terminal devices. In 1971, he created the digital image laboratory of ORTF (broadcast authority). In 1976, he was put in charge of the Antiope-Minitel project of on-line information systems and services both for broadcast and telephone line operations. He has been awarded the “Médaille Blondel” and “Effel Prize for telecommunications” as a result of these works. He also contributed to the standardization of digital services as Vice Chairman of the CCITT SGVIII (from 1985) and later Chair of ISO-IEC JTC1/SC2 (in the 1990s) where standardization of UNICODE, JPEG and MPEG were initiated under his mandate. In 1980, he was appointed Head of Graphic Telecom Services Department in CNET and was Chairman of CNET Programme Committee on Terminal and Services. From 1989 to 1995, Bernard Marti participated in the creation of European Digital Video Broadcasting institution (DVB) and directed the European Commission Project on digital Terrestrial Television broadcasting (dTTb). He was appointed to his current post of Director of Standards for France Telecom Group in 1997. Bernard Marti has been key figure for many years in the area of international telecommunication research, development and standardization. He has been in those areas instrumental in the definition and implementation of the famous “French Telematics” program - triggered off in the end of 1970s early 1980s. 14. Mark Ludwig Mark Ludwig has been elected to receive an IMTC Service Award posthumously for his leadership and service in IMTC. Mark died in an automobile accident on June 28, 2004. The following paragraph is from Mark's Eulogy. Loyal, honest, compassionate, generous, hard working, humorous. Mark William Ludwig was all of these things and more to many people. He was a devoted brother, son, uncle, nephew and brother-in-law and co-worker. Mark was a strong man, wise beyond his years, with an incredibly unique sense of humor and a heart the size of Texas. He was a strong, ambitious man who touched everyone he met with his positive attitude. His life intertwined with numerous people who will never forget him. Mark was elected to the IMTC Board of Directors in 2002 and also served as IMTC Treasurer until his death. Mark’s contributions as a BoD member were many and he was a very proactive BoD member. However, he provided his most significant contributions to the IMTC Interoperability and SuperOp! events. He co-chaired the 2002 SuperOp! in Portland, and chaired/hosted the 2003 SuperOp! in Austin. He chaired the 2004 SuperOp! until his death. On behalf of Polycom, Mark also hosted several Interoperability events. Mark evangelized IMTC and SuperOp! not only within Polycom, but to the rest of the IMTC community as well. He recruited volunteer technical staffs for these events and developed bullet proof plans to ensure that these events were executed with precision and effectiveness. Mark mixed his intensiveness with a brand of humor and optimism that has seldom been seen in this organization. IMTC Forum – May 2005 – Eibsee, Germany

Nori Sayanagi On behalf of the IMTC membership, the IMTC Board of Directors would like to present Nori Sayanagi with an IMTC Service Award in appreciation of his outstanding contributions as an IMTC Director. Nori served on the Board of Directors from August 2003 until March 2005. He recently accepted a new position in START Lab, Inc., which is a Joint Venture of Sony Corporation and Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. Under Nori’s leadership, Sony hosted and sponsored the 2004 Spring Interoperability event and 2004 Forum, both events being held at the Sony facility in San Jose, CA. Sony also participated as a sponsor in the 2003 Forum as well as the 2003 and 2004 SuperOp! events. Nori has also made numerous other contributions representing IMTC, as VP Marketing, Asia/Pacific, and he has given several presentations at conferences in Japan.
