Separating Mixtures August 31
How do you separate? • How can you separate mixtures?
Separating • Separating is based on the difference in physical properties of the substances… • Think about how you would separate a bag of m&ms • Some mixtures are easier to separate than others
Filtration • Filtration: technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid • Heterogeneous mixtures (sand & water)
Distillation • Distillation: separation technique that is based on differences in the boiling points of the substances involved • Homogeneous mixtures (most) • 2 liquids • When precisely controlled, distillation can separate substances having boiling points that differ by only a few degrees
Crystallization/Boiling • Crystallization: separation technique that results in the formation of pure solid particles from a solution containing the dissolved substance • You boil out the liquid and are left with the solid crystals • Salt water
Chromatography • Chromatography: technique that separates the components of a mixture (called the mobile phase) on the basis of the tendency of each to travel or be drawn across the surface of another material (called the stationary phase). • Example-Ink • Different masses travel different distances!
Reflection • Could you separate the colors in black pen ink? How could you do this and what separation technique would you use?
