What is conflict? • A problem that occurs between characters/forces in a story. Conflict is the driving force of plot. • Think about conflicts that have occurred in your life, what happened? With who/what?
First… • Protagonist • Main character, usually the “good guy,” but not always! • Antagonist • Major character, usually the “bad guy,” causes problems (antagonizes) for the protagonist.
Man vs. Man • When one character has a problem with another character (or characters). • Examples: • Alexander T. Wolf vs. 3 Little Pigs • Cinderella vs. Evil stepsisters
Man vs. Nature • A character is faced with a problem that is an element of nature; NOT AN ANIMAL! • Examples: • Mt. Vesuvius erupts and Tito is trying to escape the city of Pompeii. • There is a violent storm that causes a river to flood, destroying Riki-Tiki-Tavi’s home. • Billie-Jo and her family must survive living in the “Dust Bowl” of Oklahoma during the 1930’s.
Man vs. Society • When a character has a problem with a group of people, or with the rules set forth by society. • Examples: • Katniss Everdeen defies the Capitol during the Hunger Games.
Man vs. Self • Character has a struggle with his/her thoughts/feelings/emotions. • Examples: • Katniss must decide who she wants to save; Peeta or Gale? • Harry has to decide whether to fight Voldemort or go into hiding.
