HOMEWORK • Explain the contrast between Jefferson’s story with that of the prosecuting attorney’s. • Consider the following quote: “[Miss Emma] became as immobile as a great stone or as one of our oak or cypress stumps” (3). While a SIMILE is being used, what other literary device is being employed here? • Discuss the significance of this quote from Miss Emma: “‘I’ll be up here again tomorrow, Mr. Henri. I’ll be on my knees next time you see me, Mr. Henri’” (23).
