26.3 Winning the War Objective 1: Describe how WW1 became a total war and how these efforts helped to end the war Objective 2: Outline how Germany Collapsed
war drains resources (men, wealth, etc. ) • Governments shifted to total war footing • Leads to warfare through economics and propaganda in attempt to get whole of society involved • Increased involvement of women in the war effort
Great War Sacrifices • Government responsibilities increase in desperate times: • “Total War” for European governments. • channels entire nation’s resources to war effort • Economy revolved around war needs (including women). Led to rationing. • Government control of press=Propaganda.
Propaganda – spreading of ideas to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause • Often asked for monetary support of war • Allies used German conduct in Belgium to increase support – sometimes exaggerated
War Production • Need large amounts of men to fight – leads to conscription (the draft) Problems? • Germany had forced civilian labor to solve manpower shortages • Governments raised taxes, borrowed money, set prices and made strikes forbidden.
Economic Warfare • British navy blockaded the North Sea – why? • Would confiscate contraband (materials of military nature) • Allowed by international law • Germany formed U-Boats to try and break blockade – declared unrestricted sub warfare
