  2. Background • There have been few times in history where a large group of American soldiers have been captured and tortured by their enemies • One notable instance was the Bataan Death March

  3. Preceding Events • The march took place in the midst of World War II • Since the United States was fighting the Axis powers in the Atlantic and the Pacific, its armies were considerably split, giving more troops to the Atlantic theatre • This caused the Americans to suffer a few losses in their war against Japan and consequently led to the capture of some American soldiers

Preceding Events • The Americans, led by General Douglas MacArthur, were fighting the Japanese at Bataan Peninsula • After many months of fighting, the Americans were forced to surrender due to their lack of reinforcements to the Japanese • Also, troops who were stationed at Corregidor, an American base, were also captured after attempting to fight off the Japanese

  5. The Death March • The American captives from Bataan and Corregidor were forced to march to concentration camps set up by the Japenese • In all, the Americans had to march over 70 miles • The term “death march” was soon realized after the Americans experienced horrible torture during the march

The Death March • The terror that the Japanese inflicted on the Americans was unimaginable • They experienced extreme fatigue, hunger, and sickness due to the Japanese's lack of provisions • The soldiers who fell out of line during the march were beheaded or were just shot • Other tortures included beatings, stabbings, and simply being worked to death by the Japanese

  7. Aftermath • After the march, over 10,000 Americans had died, and those who survived still had to face imprisonment in the concentration camps • This outraged Americans and encouraged a victory in the Pacific for the United States

  8. Aftermath • The United States eventually claimed victory in the Pacific after long years of fighting • The victory propelled the United States to its rank as the most powerful nation of the modern age and severely crippled the Japanese economy and way of life
