1. Meeting the Needs of Unemployed People Aims:
Understand what unemployed people need.
Look at how the government helps meet these needs.
3. Jobseekers Allowance 1996 introduced to replace unemployment benefit.
Must be able to work seeking employment.
JSA only paid to people who have contributed to NI.
Short term
13 weeks full pay while looking for job in their profession.
After 13 weeks must look for something else.
After 6 months switch to income based JSA (Lower money).
Cannot refuse any job on grounds of pay.
4. Other Benefits Skillseekers
Training & work experience.
At least Ł50 per week.
Expected to get job after programme.
Modern Apprenticeships
School leavers
High training college
On job training paid by employer.
5. The New Deal 18 and over who have been claiming JSA for at least 6 months.
Gateway (4 months) help and guidance, identifies needs. May go on course, counselling etc.
If they still have no job after 4 months 4 options;
Take job with employer where they receive Ł60 week.
Work for voluntary sector.
Work with environment task for 6 months.
Full time education.
There is no 5th option all benefits will stop.
