Big Changes Ahead! • Shift from California State Standards to Common Core Standards • Last year of STAR testing • Smarter Balance Testing • Measures of Academic Practice (MAP) • Project Based Learning
Common Core Standards • Moving To Common Core State Standards (CCSS) this year • Deeper thinking • Reflect the knowledge and skills relevant to the real world • http://vimeo.com/51933492 • http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards • Challengethisyear: We do nothave a new reportcardbasedon Common Core
Standardized Testing and STAR Reporting • This is our last year of STAR testing. After this school year, there will be no more paper and pencil, multiple choice, one letter answer questions. • Preparing for the change through (MAP) Measures of Performance testing, which will eventually lead us to Smarter Balance testing. • Eventually using Smarter Balance testing to evaluate student growth. This will replace STAR next year. • Switching from California State Standards to Common Core State Standards
MAP Testing • Measures of Academic Progress • Understanding each student’s academic level gives teachers the power to help them excel • MAP dynamically adapts to a student’s responses – as they take the test. Answer a question correctly and the test presents a more challenging item. Miss a question, and MAP offers a simpler item. In this way, the test narrows in on a student’s learning level, engaging them with content that allows them to succeed. • Administered 3 times a year: September, December, March • http://vimeo.com/63121629
Smarter Balance Testing • Last year 4-6 grade students were part of Smarter Balance Testing. • The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is developing next-generation assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA/literacy) and Mathematics for grades 3-8 and 11. Assessments usecomputer adaptive testing technologies to the greatest extent possible to provide meaningful feedback and actionable data that teachers and other educators can use to help students succeed. • What does this look like? • http://sampleitems.smarterbalanced.org/itempreview/sbac/index.htm
Project Based Learning • Thanks to our PTO, the teachers here at Del Dayo had 3 days of training from the Buck Institute last June. • In Project Based Learning (PBL), students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking, research, use of technology). • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMCZvGesRz8
