Aztecs, Mayans and Incas, Oh My! Chapter 7 Sections 1&2 Pages 154-167 EQs: What major civilizations emerged in Latin America? Where were they located? What were their features and achievement?
The Mayan “Empire” • Time Period: 300 – 900 AD • Location: Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to Central America • Government/Politics: city states, each ruled by a chief and a bureaucracy of nobles, each city state fought each other to be the dominate state in the empire (sound familiar?)
The Mayan Empire • Religion: Polytheistic, many gods of heaven and hell, animals (jaguar) and earth (corn)…priests conducted elaborate ceremonies including food and human sacrifices (Apocalypto) • Farming: Cleared rainforest floors and built raised fields surrounded by water full of fish and other creatures
The Mayan Empire • Achievements: • Massive pyramids • Complex hieroglyphics • An accurate 365 day calendar • The concept of zero and other numbers • Decline: Disappeared suddenly, many theories include… • Warfare, they killed each other off • Overpopulation, which strained the environment • Peasant revolts against leaders • Superstition, they predicted the end of the world on the calendar and all ran for the hills
The Aztec Empire • Time Period: 1200s – 1500s • Location: The Central Valley of Mexico • Government: Empire, with an emperor chosen by nobles and priests to lead the civilization to war (war state, sound familiar?), centered at the island city of Tenochtitlan
The Aztec Empire • Religion: Polytheistic, gods of earth and nature, Huitzilopochtli (weet-see-lo-poct-lee) was the supreme sun god…were BIG on human sacrifice (more than Maya and Inca combined) • Farming: Chinampas (floating gardens)
The Aztec Empire • Achievements: herbs and medicines for illnesses, ability to set broken bones (splints), fill cavities in teeth, the sauna • Decline: Fell to the invading Spanish forces under Hernan Cortes in the 1520s
Inca Empire • Time Period: 1400s-1500s • Location: Andean South America • Government: Confederation of early peoples of the Andes (Chavin, Mochica, Nazca) ruled by a supreme God-king with absolute power, nobles that ruled provinces along a chain of command back to the emperor in Cuzco
Inca Empire • Religion: Polytheistic, gods of nature, the sun and moon, held monthly festivals with offerings (human, crops, etc.) presented by priests • Farming: Step terraces on sides of mountains and llama herding in the high Altiplano, land owned by the empire and fields were divided to service different people (pg. 165)
Inca Empire • Achievements: • Best metalworkers in the Americas • Complex surgeries and antiseptics/anesthesia medicines • Complex road systems, even in mountains, and bridges • Quipu – knotted strings for record keeping • Decline: ALSO were conquered by the Spanish, this time by Francisco Pizzaro’s conquistadors
