  2. Allied forces turned the tide in the Atlantic: • Manufactured new ships & traveled in convoys. • Planes used radar to locate subs. • Broke the German code system – Enigma. • By the end of WWII 70% of German submarine crews were dead.

  3. WWII in the Soviet Union: • Summer 1941: Hitler invades the Soviet Union. • Laid seige to the city of Leningrad. - Hundreds of thousands Russian civilians died. • The Russians defeated the Germans in Stalingrad. - Over 2 million German casualties in the Soviet Union by 1944.

German forces attempt to take North Africa: • German commander Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, tried to drive the British from North Africa. • The British defeated Rommel at the Battle ofEl Alamein. • Operation Torch: U.S. forces led by Dwight D. Eisenhower invade North Africa. - The Germans were pushed out of North Africa. • The Allies then moved into Italy. - Tuskegee Airmen: 1st African American pilots to see action.

D-Day June 6, 1944 • Operation Overlord: The planned Allied invasion of France through Normandy. • General Eisenhower commanded the invasion, GeneralOmar Bradley commanded the American troops. - Paratroopers, Bombers, Battleship artillery, Amphibious craft, & hundreds of thousands of troops led the assault. • With the success of Operation Overlord the Germans were in retreat.

  9. Battle of the Bulge • December 16, 1944: The Germans launched a surprise offensive near Bastogne, Belgium. • On December 26, Lt. General George S. Patton arrived with American reinforcements. - The German offensive was halted. • The Allies set their sights on Germany & Hitler.
