Before we begin… We left off with Hitler in control of most of Europe! Britain was the only legitimate Allied Power! (Poor Britain) Britain’s supplies were extremely limited as everything is getting blown up by U-boats! Axis Powers are now in Greece and Yugoslavia, advancing in North Africa and the Soviet Union! Jan. 1942- China and the Soviet Union officially join the Allied Powers
North Africa (1940-1943) Sept. 1940- Italian forces attack Egypt… did not go so well! Hitler sends in *Erwin Rommel- German general of the Afrika Korps *Nicknamed the Desert Fox Master of warfare and surprise attacks
North Africa (1940-1943) Fighting goes on for 2 years Back-and-forth over a 1,500 mile area *Battle of El Alamein (Oct. 23-Nov. 4, 1942) *Rommel vs. Montgomery *Bernard Montgomery- British general *Intense fighting, Rommel had to retreat, gets caught between Montgomery’s men and Eisenhower’s men Afrika Korps surrendered in May, 1943 Rommel escapes to Tunisia and then is placed in France
Erwin Rommel Humane and professional Never accused of war crimes Ignored orders to kill Jews and civilians Linked to a conspiracy to kill Hitler Assured his family would be safe, he killed himself October 14, 1944 The story of his death did not come out until the Nuremberg Trials

Italy (1943-1945) July, 1943- Allies land on Sicily Begin landing troops on the Italian mainland in September Mussolini is overthrown, new Italian Prime Minister (Pietro Badoglio) makes peace with the Allies and declares war on Germany!! (Oct. 13, 1943) Allies in Rome by June, 1944 Mussolini killed on April 28, 1945 Germans out of Italy by May 1945
Eastern Front- Soviet Union (1941-1943) Invaded in June, 1941- Axis Powers had advanced deep into the Soviet Union *Battle of Stalingrad- (August 23, 1942- February 2, 1943) *Bloodiest battle ever! Combined casualties almost 2 million! Germans started by bombing, then fighting building by building Soviets would not give up Surrounded the Germans and starved them out
France (1944) *George C. Marshall- Roosevelt’s top military advisor, Army Chief of Staff, supported an Allied invasion of France Eisenhower was put in charge of planning Operation Overlord Landing on the beaches of Normandy, France
D-Day *June 6, 1944 *Allied soldiers landed in Normandy *Largest sea-and-land invasion in history! Landed 155,000 troops in France! *General George S. Patton- Tank commander Broke through German lines in July, 1944
Paris! French citizens rose up against the Germans August 24- Free French troops entered the city! Paris is liberated!!
On to Germany… (1944-1945) Allies pushed through Belgium and France, into Germany *Battle of the Bulge- (Dec. 16, 1944- Jan. 25, 1945) Ardennes Mountain Region in Belgium 25 divisions of the Germany Army attacked in heavy snow *Almost broke the Allied lines *Bloodiest battle for the U.S. soldiers 89,500 casualties
