Active Listening… • How well you listen affects you and those around you. • It can affect your productivity • It can affect your relationships • Think about how much information we hear each day! • Research suggests that we typically remember 25 – 50 % of what we hear…
That means that when you are talking, most people are only really listening to half of what you are saying and they will only remember 25% to 50%.
1. Pay Attention Give the speaker your undivided attention, and listen for the message or meaning. Just listen, put aside your own thoughts. Don't plan what you are going to say.
2. Show That You're Listening Use your body language to show you are listening. • Make eye contact • Smile and use other facial expressions. • Note your posture and make sure it is open and inviting. • Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like yes, and uh huh.
3. Reflect Back As a listener, your job is to understand what is being said. This may require you to reflect back to the speaker what you understand. Paraphrasing: "What I'm hearing is," and "Sounds like you are saying" Ask questions for clarification. Summarize what you have heard periodically.
4. Suspend Judgment We all have assumptions and biases – when we are truly listening, we suspend our judgement. Listening isn’t agreeing, it’s understanding. Let the speaker to finish each point before asking questions. Don't interrupt, especially with counter arguments.
5. Respond Respectfully Attacking someone destroys the trust and respect gained though actively listening - you gain nothing. Be candid, open, and honest in your response – actively listening does not mean we agree. Respond after you have understanding and always with respect.
Practice… • Pay attention • Show that you are listening • Reflect back • Suspend judgement • Respond respectfully
