  6. Islands • Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland - all located in the North Atlantic • Sicily, Corsica, Crete, Sardinia - all located in the Mediterranean Region

  14. Northern European Plain • Fertile agricultural area of Europe - produced food for centuries - France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Poland • Subject to invasion throughout history - flat land allows for easy travel for armies

  15. Natural Resources • Europe has abundant natural resources - two most important are coal and iron ore - both are needed for industrialization • Multitude of other resources - copper, lead, petroleum, timber, fish

  17. Europe: Oil Producer • Oil and Petroleum - discovered in the North Sea in 1959 - technology made production possible • Europe a major source for the world’s oil supply

  18. European Agriculture • 33% of Europe is used for agriculture • Variety of crops - wheat, grains, grapes, olives, and cork - different regions suitable for certain crops
