  2. 2. John Knox • Scottish preacher & made Calvinism Scotland’s official religion • Each church was led by a group of elders called presbyters • His followers became known as Presbyterians 3. The Anabaptist • Only baptized those who were old enough to understand the Bible & choose to be a Christian • Church & state should be separate and refused to fight in war • Persecuted by Catholics & Protestants • Influenced the… Mennonites, Amish, Quakers, & Baptist

Catholic Reformation • AKA – Counter Reformation • Helping the Catholics remain loyal to the church • Ignatius of Loyola • From Loyola, Spain & wrote Spiritual Exercise, 1522 i. day-by-day plan of meditation, prayer, & study • Started the Society of Jesus, followers became known as The Jesuits • Founded schools throughout Europe • Convert non-Christians to Catholicism • Stop the spread of Protestantism
