  1. GivingLet Each One Lay By In Store “Upon the first day of the week let each one you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no collection be made when I come” (1 Cor 16:1-2)

  2. GivingIntroduction • Giving/Offerings: From Cain/Abel God has commanded offerings as gifts from man’s possessions (Gen 4) • Giving/Law: God required sacrificial offerings of unblemished animals as gifts. • Giving/Tithe: Law also regulated a fixed amount: tithing • Giving/Heart: New covenant demands giving as prospered and purposed in heart

  3. TithingGod’s Law to Israel • Tithes: A tithe is 1/10 and is holy unto the Lord (Lev 27:30) • Tithes: A tithe was required of grain, fruits, oil, wine, and firstlings of the flocks/herds (Deut 14:22, 23, 28) • Levites: Tithes were used to support Levites who had no inheritance in the land (Num 18:24, 26, 28) • Levites/Tithes: Levites were commanded to give a tithe of the tithes they received (Num 18:26)

  4. TithingLessons from Pharisees • Mal 3:8,10: Failure to give all the tithe was robbery of God • Matt 23:23: Pharisees were scrupulously meticulous when giving tithes to God • Matt 23:23: This was good but hypocritical because they left undone weightier matters • Luke 18:9,11: Pharisees tithed out of a self-righteous spirit—thinking this justified them • Lesson: Exact and liberal giving cannot atone for unrighteous living otherwise

  5. GivingNew Testament Teaching • Acts/Epistles: New Testament teaching is silent about tithing except Old Testament references (Heb 7:5,6,8,9) • Law Abrogated: New Testament says law of Moses was annulled (Col 2:14; Eph 2:13-16; Gal 3:23-25) • Not Judged by Law: Law a shadow of good things to come and men must no longer be judged by these things (Col 2:16-17)

  6. GivingThe Book of Acts • Sold Possession: Christians sold possessions to care for brethren in need (Acts 2:44-45; 4:32-37; 6:1-6) • Apostles’ Feet: Money laid at “apostles’ feet”—thus under their authority (Acts 4:35; 5:2) • Their Own: Money was their own and under their power for use until given (Acts 5:4) • To Elders: One church sent to another church by giving into hands of elders (Acts 11:29-30) • Footnote: Funds also used to support preachers and elders who were given to gospel (2 Cor 11:8; Phil 4:15-16; 1 Tim 5:17-18)

  7. GivingGod’s Ordained Principles • First Day: Brethren were instructed to give on the first day of the week (1 Cor 16:1-2) • Prosperity: Brethren were to give as they had been prospered (1 Cor 16:1-2) • Liberally: Brethren were to sow or give liberally to the Lord (2 Cor 9:6) • Heart: Brethren were to give as they had purposed in their hearts (2 Cor 9:7) • Cheerful: God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9:7)

  8. Giving The Widow’s Mites • Give Selves: Men give liberally and cheerfully when they give themselves first to the Lord (2 Cor 8:2,5) • Widow: The widow gave two mites—all of her living (Mark 12:42) • Liberally: Widow gave liberally because she gave out of her want (Mark 12:44) • Motivation: It was love, faith, dedication to God from the heart that moved the widow—a true act of worship, devotion, and adoration of God

  9. Giving Conclusion • Israel: Remember when Israel became indifferent to God they offered sick, blind, lame, and diseased animals (Mal 1:6-8) • David: Remember that David refused a donation of land for the temple because he would not offer to God that which cost him nothing (2 Sam 24:24) • Christians: Those who love God will offer liberally and sacrificially what they have in devotion and dedication to the one alone that they worship and serve (Matt 4:10)
