  5. About the project Project Objective: To innovate undergraduate curricula in computer science, by restructuring existing and involving new high quality courses, flexible enough to adapt to the new technologies and the future one's. To develop cooperation between consortium partners.

  6. Outcomes • Reconstructions of CS courses in fields: ComputerArchitecture (CA), Logic Design (LD), Data Base Systems (DBS), Computer Networks (CNet) and Internet & E-Technologies (IntET). • New subjects in Computer Science. • New teaching environment in CS courses and retraining of teaching staff. • Progress reviewed and future activities planed.

  8. Inputs in the second year • Successful first year • Approved travel plan • Approved purchasing of equipment • Approved publishing plan • Approved method of coordination and administration of the project

  9. Realization of Travels More then 30 colleagues from FEEN were involved.

  10. Realization The following equipment has been purchased at Faculty of Electronic Engineering: • 20 PC + 1 quasi server • 1 switch • 3 digital projectors and • 16 books

  11. Realization of publishing activities The following issues have been published at Faculty of Electronic Engineering: • Proceedings of Workshops on Computer Science Education • 7 textbooks • 3 textbooks (in publishing procedure) • one issue of Facta Universitatis

  12. Innovations in teaching-(formal approach) • New topics involved in more than 20 different courses • One completely new course (delivered for the first time in winter semester 2003/04) “Software Engineering” is involved in current curricula at Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Nis. • The procedure for involving four new courses in CS curriculum has been initiated at FEEN (expected first course delivery winter semester 2004/5). • Work on reconstructing CS courses and involving new courses in existing CS curriculum initiated the work on draft version of new CS curriculum. First proposals have already been discussed.

  13. Main events in the second year (4 WS + 2 Symp) • Symposium on Innovation of Computer Science Curriculum in Higher Education(TEI, Athens, April 21st, 2003) • Annual CMT meeting (TEI, Athens, April 22nd and 23rd, 2003) • Workshop on Lab. Practicing in CS Education(FEEN, Nis, June 18th, 2003) • Workshop on Innovations in Teaching Computer Science Courses(FEEN, Nis, October 7th, 2003) • Workshop on Teaching Methods In Computer Science Courses(FNSMS, Skopje, October 08th, 2003)

  14. Main events in the second year (4 WS + 2 Symp) • Workshop on Tools for CS Education(FNSMS, Skopje – Bitola, December 11th – 14th, 2003) • Symposium on Innovation of Computer Science Curriculum in Higher Education: Retraining of Young teaching staff(TEI, Athens, February 24th-27th, 2004) • Annual CMT meeting(CSUD, University of Dortmund, March 15th and 16th, 2004) • Joint working group meetings(CSUD, University of Dortmund, March 15th and 19th, 2004) WSs and Symps were specific checkpoints for the project.

  15. Key successes • Proceedings of Workshops on Computer Science Education • 10 textbooks • Establishing new teaching environment

  16. Key successes - Proceedings • Proceedings of Workshops on Computer Science Education • The Proceedings describes the impact of new fundamentals on undergraduate CS engineering courses at all five participating academic institutions of our joint project during the first two years of this project. • Six Workshops and two Symposiums in two years. • In total, 120 presentations, and 164 participants from 15 different academic institutions take active parts during the preparation of the material and numerous discussions related to presentation of the achieved results of our joint project. • 35 papers passed the referee procedure for publication in this special issue PROCEEDINGS. The contributed papers were divided into six sessions, on innovations curriculum, lab practicing, teaching tools, Internet technologies, Mathematics in computer science, and selected topics.

  17. Key successes -New teaching environment • What does it mean? • New labs with new equipment • Using modern multimedia teaching tools • Web support to teaching

  18. a) New labs with new equipment What did we do? • New teaching lab was established with one server and 15 PC work-stations (Room 523 - fifth floor). • Existing teaching lab (equipped by Tempus CD JEP 16160/2001 in March 2003) was upgraded with 5 new working places / PCs (Room 223 - second floor). • New digital projectors are at Computer Science Department teaching staff disposal. • Purchased books are registered at Faculty Library. Lab practical classes from more than twenty different courses are delivered in these Labs.

  19. b, c) MTT + Web support • Modern teaching tools are applied at teaching • Important innovations relate to using and developing original multimedia teaching tools (SimArch for Computer Architectures, Intelligent Tutoring System for Databases, Simulators for Computer Networks). • A lot of teaching material has been prepared for Web publication • E-Forum for discussion about proposals for new CS curriculum has been initiated (http://cs.elfak.ni.ac.yu/forum/).

  20. Dissemination The following dissemination actions were undertaken: • Proceedings on Workshops on Computer Science Education was published • 4 Workshops and two Symposiums were organized • 10 textbooks and manuals were printed • Presentation of project results was delivered at Tempus Information Day – Athens, Greece, November 3rd, 2003. • Web site was regularly updated (http://tempus.elfak.ni.ac.yu),

  21. Web site All current activities and achieved results concerning the Project CD_JEP-16160-2001 can be found at web address http://tempus.elfak.ni.ac.yu tempus@elfak.ni.ac.yu

  22. Web site • Why is the site so important? • We announce incoming events on the site. • We inform our colleagues about the project. • The site contains a lot of presentations with high quality academic contents. • Follow-up, for each event, is available on the site. • The site provides information about the status of the project. • The site is an open report for the Commission.

  23. Next activities – third year • Four week stays at EU universities for retraining teaching staff. • Realization of student mobility program (12 students at EU institutions). • New upgrading of existing labs. • Conference on CS Education in March 2005 • Special issue of Facta Universitatis on CS education
