  1. Law Career Services presents: Sharpening Your Networking Skills And Using the SCU Law Alumni Network

  2. “It’s not who you know, it’s who you get to know.” (Kimm Walton, a.k.a. “The Job Goddess”) So Let’s Start Now……...

  3. Agenda • What is networking? • Why should I network? • Receptions & Career Fairs • What to expect • Next steps

  4. Networking is NOT: Smoozing a bunch of strangers!

  5. Networking IS: • meeting friends of friends!! • joining a club and organization because you have an interest in something and meeting other people with the same interest. • asking for advice.

  6. Why should I network? • Networking is the single most effective way of getting a job. • A recent NALP survey indicates that almost half of the jobs law students got were through self-initiated contact with their employers or by a referral. • Mass mailings DON’T USUALLY WORK.

  7. Why should I network? • You are practicing skills that you will use your entire legal career even if you stay at one firm.

  8. Why Receptions and Career Fairs? • Employers and alumni have already volunteered their time to talk with you. They want to!!! • It’s great practice for networking. • AND you never know who THEY might know!

  9. But What About After the Reception or Career Fair? • Write down at list of at least five names right now of potential contacts. • Who do I know? • Don’t limit yourself to attorneys. • Family, friends, old employers, current employers, alumni, etc...

  10. What Next? • Contact the people on your list. • Phone, E-mail, Mail • It is NOT about getting a job from THEM. Instead, focus on obtaining advice, information, or additional contacts.
