The problem! • All first year education students enrolled in EDLA 107 have the same text book. • Few of them can understand it. • The linguistic terminology in the text is difficult. • The concepts in the text are difficult for the students.
The reality! • Lecturers and tutors in this unit need to unpack the terminology and concepts for the students. • Lecturers and tutors need to appreciate that nearly all students taking the unit are generation Y. • Lecturers and tutors need to accept that generation Y responds better to visuals than written academic texts. • Lecturers and tutors need to present the terminology and concepts of the text in a visual format.
The solution! Make eight movie clips to complement the chapters of the text with which students have difficulties.
The result! • Video Clip One Elaborated and restricted codes • Video Clip Two Pragmatics • Video Clip Three Critical literacy
Reflections • The logistics of working within a group. • Gaining an ethics clearance. • The timetable. • Working with schools. • Limitations of software. • The budget! • Too far reaching… • Time is the enemy!
