ALTC Emergent Technology Barbara Goldflam
Challenge 1 • Need to communicate to commencing undergraduate students in NC2012 • Need the communication to be attractive, engaging and consistent across the University Tools • Created series of short videos/Powerpoints on • Structure of the new degrees • Majors in the new degrees • Embedded these in Unistart website for new students
Ideas: good and bad … • How to engage the listener? • Vokis? Too goofy, too hard to embed into Powerpoint • Use contrasting voices to create a conversation – between a student and a student adviser • How to make it look attractive, but still corporate? • Used explosions, arrows etc • Used Prezzi - didn’t detract from the branding but made the page a bit more interesting
Presentations on the structure of the new degrees Created presentation on Powerpoint Exported it to Prezzi Recorded presentation using Echo360 Published to Lectopia Uploaded presentation to youTube Embedded youTube video in Unistart website! Welcome presentation
Presentations on majors BG Created template for presentations on Powerpoint FacultyStaff recorded presentations using Echo360 Faculty staff published them to Lectopia BG Uploaded presentation to youTube Admissions Office embedded video in Unistart website! Engineering Presentations
Successes • A new series of presentations created on a consistent theme. They are attractive, engaging and accessible Challenges • Variation in the quality of the presentations • Some were unusable • Some were expensive • Some were not created
Challenge 2: Creating a useful guide for commencing students • Tool – included QR codes • Tool – promoted online communities
Lessons for the future • The technology is the easy part! Getting staff to use it effectively is the challenge • There is a residual reluctance to record lectures online • Be creative – there is (nearly) always a solution – use alternative formats where necessary…
