Goals for Today • Understand how the new standards are organized. • Identify a “Big Idea” and it’s vertical alignment. • Better understand “Cross-cutting Ideas” in light of a lesson and the context in which you work. • OSPI Update on current issues.
Why new science standards? Goal: Better prepare students to: • Be successful on state science assessments • Participate in post-secondary education • Meet the workforce needs of tomorrow • Become scientifically literate citizens 2007 Legislature passed HB 1906 calling for: • State Board review and OSPI revision of science standards

Your Task. • Read the lesson and identify the following: • Places that students can demonstrate the performance expectation(s) for the: • Inquiry (page-Green). • Ecosystem domain of science (page-Pink). • Math Connections (page-Blue).
The Standards in Your Context Discussion question: • How does this lesson most effectively integrate the cross-cutting idea of inquiry with the domain of ecosystems? • How might this play out in your classroom?
