How Conflict is Created • Conflict occurs when one party decides that the way things are going is not okay and seeks change but that change is not agreed to by the other party. ecac2012
It may take “two-to-tango” but it only takes one party to declare a conflict. ecac2012
Root Causes • Most conflicts will have one or more of the elements as root causes. • A solution to conflict will match the cause. ecac2012

Data… • Conflict over data or facts • Most data conflicts have data or factual solutions ecac2012
Relationships… • Conflicts arise over a relationship or a communication style • There will often be a “hidden” reason for conflict Relationship issues must be addressed! ecac2012
Values… • Perceived or actual incompatibilities in their belief system • Sometimes differences in expectations become a values issue Must have a values based solution ecac2012
Resources… • Conflicts over real or perceived scarcity of resources • Compliance versus “Promising Practices” Need flexibility and creativity to resolve ecac2012
History… • Core of the conflict is in “the past” • Usually not IEP issues Must be resolved in order to have agood working relationship ecac2012
Structural • Realities which exists outside of the school which are having an impact on the parent or family Resolution must include understanding of the issues and a willingness to recognize and problem solve ecac2012
Psychological… • Conflicts can be created or maintained by the need of humans for: • Power • Control • Autonomy • Recognition • Attention • or love • Difficult to identify Search for a viable solution to help some of these needs ecac2012
