Reading • Instruction will be given using the Reading Street series as well as other trade books • Individual and small group activities will be used along with whole class instruction
Reading • We will be using the Kid Biz program. • Students are encouraged to use this program at home too! • Link on class webpage
Scholastic Book Orders • Students will be given the opportunity to order books from Scholastic during the school year. • Book orders will be sent home with students. • You can order books online or bring your book order to school. • If you bring your order to school, please bring exact change or a check.
Writing • We use the 6 +1 Traits of Writing which include: • IDEAS • ORGANIZATION • VOICE • WORD CHOICE • SENTENCE FLUENCY • CONVENTIONS • PRESENTATION • We will be working on a Paragraph of the Week, every day of our week. As well as grammar and spelling.
Math • The Everyday Mathematics program is designed to help your child learn a wide range of mathematical concepts as well as insuring knowledge of basic arithmetic skills. • Over the school year the children will work with patterns, fractions, sorting, classifying, graphing, measurement, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, probability, geometry, place value, money, and problem solving. • Flexible Math Groups: Your student will be grouped according to his/her ability and needed pacing. You student will rotate between all 3 Fourth grade teachers throughout the year. We will change teachers every quarter.
Math • Students need to memorize their multiplication facts! • Multiplication fact knowledge is the foundation for many of the math concepts that will be learned this year. If your child does not master these facts they will fall behind!
Science and Social Studies • The Expeditionary Learning approach is experiential and project-based, involving students in original research -- with experts -- to create high-quality products for audiences beyond the classroom. • This approach is used to improve student achievement and build student character. It promotes rigorous and engaging curriculum and inquiry-based learning.
Technology • This year we are going to use more technology in our classroom. • Class Website: http://mrscopplesclass.weebly.com/websites.html • www.KidBlog.org • www.Typingweb.com • www.everydaymathonline.com
Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Every student signed a copy of our Classroom Constitution. • Our class rules are: • Be respectful and responsible. • Be organized and follow directions. • Be prepared. • Don’t be afraid to try new things!
Homework • Homework assignments are used to reinforce the curriculum that is presented in the classroom. • Homework packets will be sent home on Mondays, and they will be due on Friday. • The spelling words for the week are included in the packet and listed on our class website. Spelling tests will be on Friday. • Math study links may be sent home almost every night. Homework will vary based on their math teacher. • Planners need to be signed nightly!
ReadingLog • Students will be assigned to read at least 20 minutes every night. Students will turn in a reading log every Friday! • If students reach 100 minutes by Friday they will earn a Reading bead to put on their necklace. • Hopefully, by the end of the year we will have full necklaces! • There will be special challenges occasionally, over breaks, where they may be able to earn a special bead if they complete the challenge. (Thanksgiving break, Winter break, etc)
Birthdays • Invitations to parties will not be passed out at school unless every child in the class is invited. • If you wish to send a small treat with you child on his/her birthday, that would be fine. Please, clear drinks only! • Parents are welcome to come and stay if they would like. • Please notify me in advance of your plans. Time will be set aside at the end of the school day for the celebration.
Snacks • Lunch time will be at 12:35 so I do recommend bringing a snack to eat mid-morning. • Students are allowed to bring a healthy snack to school with them. Students will be able to enjoy their snack after specials time at 11:00. • Students may also have a water bottle with them at their desk. Students should bring their water bottles home on Fridays to be washed. In order to protect the carpet, only water will be allowed to drink inside the classroom.
StarStudent • Each student will be given the opportunity to be the Star Student. • On Monday of the Star’s week they will need to bring in pictures to decorate their board, up to 3 items to share, and the Estimation jar. Estimation jar instructions will be included. • Students will get special privileges throughout the week.
School Parties • Halloween, Winter, and Valentine’s Day are observed. • The room mother is in charge of classroom parties and will contact parents interested in helping with each specific party.
BIST • The concept of BIST is to provide Grace and Accountability. We accept all students with the needs they bring to us and we hold them accountable for their behavior. Students know it is never okay to be disruptive or hurtful at Edwardsville Elementary. The BIST concept is not about punishment, but teaching a change of behavior in order for students to make the right choices.
