Background • The Council of Trent was a series of meetings between Catholics 1545-1563 • Trent is a city in the Italian Peninsula • Pope Paul III realized that the Protestant Reformation was spreading, so he helped organize these meetings • This is part of the Counter-Reformation
Protestants were invited but could not vote on issues • They stopped attending by 1552 • The Council of Trent was made up of three distinct periods • 1545-1549 • 1551-1552 • 1562-1563
Purpose and Results • Condemn principles of Protestantism • Define Catholic teachings • The Catholic interpretation of the Bible was final
Salvation was achieved through faith and good deeds • A Pope can grant indulgences, but economic aspect phased out • Latin was the universal language for worship
Indulgence • An indulgence granted by authority of the Pope by Johann Tetzel in 1517. The text reads: "By the authority of all the saints, and in mercy towards you, I absolve you from all sins and misdeeds and remit all punishments for ten days."
Priests were not allowed to get married • Common people could get divorced, but could not remarry until their spouse passed away • Pope Pius IV ratified the decisions of the council in 1564
Who Am I? • Everyone will receive a name tag • These names will be different people from the Reformation • Your job (without cheating) is to figure out who you are by asking your classmates a series of questions • Even if someone guesses right, do not tell them if they are correct
Only Questions You Can Ask • Am I Catholic? • Am I Protestant? • Am I a Christian? • Does anything bad happen to me? • Do I do anything bad?
Mock Council of Trent • This activity is not intended to change anyone’s religious views • For our purposes, Protestants and Catholics will attend the council • 1’s will be Lutheran, 2’s will be Calvinists, 3’s will be Zwingli and 4’s will be Catholics • Your job is to determine 4 things you stand for in your respective religion (also include any books important to your faith) • You will have about 10 minutes to prepare and then each religion will take turns pleading their case • Make sure everyone is actively involved in the presentation
