What happened ? • Pope Paul III wanted to define the Catholic doctrines for the Catholic reformation • Reaffirmed Catholic teachings that had been challenged by the Protestants • Held for 20 years • It forbade the selling of indulgences • They had ordered to follow strict rules of behavior
Who was involved ? • Pope Paul III • Catholic Church • Jesuits
Disunity in Europe • Charles V had wanted the church look at first an attempt to please the Protestants and hopefully tempt them back to the church. Once they were back they could look at doctrine. Paul III didn’t want this as reforms could financially damage him and concessions could diminish his authority the result was that two separate sections dealt with reform and doctrine simultaneously. • Any changes in the Catholic Church depended on the attitude of the pope. If there was no desire for change then there was no change but there were popes who were the opposite and were interested to keep moving forward
