Time Frame • Protestants were invited but could not vote on issues • They stopped attending by 1552 • The Council of Trent was made up of three distinct periods • 1545-1549 • 1551-1552 • 1562-1563
Purpose & Results • Condemn principles of Protestantism • Define Catholic teachings • The Catholic interpretation of the Bible was final
Purpose & Results • Salvation was achieved through faith and good deeds • A Pope can grant indulgences, but the economic aspect would be phased out • Latin was the universal language for worship
Indulgence • An indulgence granted by authority of the Pope by Johann Tetzel in 1517. The text reads: "By the authority of all the saints, and in mercy towards you, I absolve you from all sins and misdeeds and remit all punishments for ten days."
Findings of the Council • Priests were not allowed to get married • Common people could get divorced, but could not remarry until their spouse passed away • Pope Pius IV ratified the decisions of the council in 1564
