Bodies Influencing and Promoting Participation and Excellence in Physical Activity. Mr. P. Leighton Contemporary Sporting Issues
Today’s Session… • Understand how sport in the UK is influenced: who is involved and how? • Look at the “Performance Pyramid” with adaptations. • Recognize the work done by UK Sport.
Sport in the UK… • Influenced by a wide range of organisational bodies- these include… • NGB’s • Local and National Governments • Sports Councils • Special Interest Groups • Local Schools and Clubs
The UK and Sports Admin… • The UK’s Sports administration system is Decentralised. • Decentralised basically means self governing and not centrally held by one body. • Grass roots clubs and local associations are self governing. • Although this gives power to small groups and clubs- negatively there is little towards overall governing sports policy.
Continued… • Since the successful 2012 bid for the Olympics some changes have been attempted- Including… • UK Sport is particularly keen to minimise organisational inefficiency in the system as a whole. • NGB’s are also making improvements to their management and systems • Small private clubs depend on volunteers- larger clubs are now becoming more businesslike.
Limited outside interference allows sporting associations to build on a tradition and to use their initiative to meet needs. ---------------------------- Historically, keen and committed volunteers have run sport in the UK. From small local clubs to NGB’s. A decentralised system can be inefficient with everyone “doing their own thing” without a coordinated focus. ------------------------------ With no overall policy a lack of professional training and very few full time paid administrators there have been inconsistency of effectiveness both in and between organisations. Positives and Negatives of this system…
