PREALGEBRA CHAPTER 1 SECTION 3
VARIABLES AND EXPRESSIONS: GOAL: Evaluate expressions containing variables and translate verbal phrases into algebraic expressions. A variable is a letter used to be a place holder for any value. Examples of variables x, y, z An algebraic expression contains sums or products of variables and numbers. Examples: 3x + 52, 5y – 7, 6z + 8
EVALUATING EXPRESSIONS: EXAMPLES: 5x + 9; for x = 6 3y – 7; for y = 5 2x + 3y – 11; for x = 7 and y = 2 6m – 4n; for m = 10 and n = 3 xy + 12; for x = 3 and y = 9
TRANSLATE VERBAL PHRASES INTO EXPRESSIONS: EXAMPLES: Twelve points more than the dolphins scored. Four times a number increased by six. Seven times a number decreased by ten. Double a number increased by four.
